Decibel Open Air, held in Florence for its past five editions, returned triumphantly in early September, showcasing a wide range of international musical talents in an unparalleled setting.
Florence, known for its Renaissance art and breathtaking architecture, is also home to Decibel, one of Europe’s prominent electronic music festivals. Set against the picturesque backdrop, just 20 minutes from the city’s heart and adjacent to Peretola Airport, the event sprawled over a massive 100,000 square meters of lush greenery.
Despite its short 12-hour span, the festival resonates with electronic music’s rich vibrancy and passion. An impressive turnout of 50,000 attendees, primarily from Italy and neighboring Germany and Spain, witnessed an eclectic mix of local talents and international artists.
While alcohol remained conspicuously absent due to permit constraints, the soft drinks and bottled water became a refreshing oasis for attendees, combating the relentless September heat.
Decibel’s start symbolized the local flavor, with performances from Neapolitan artist Paco S Less, Suara’s Cora Kerj, and the dynamic duo Peter/Feela. This Italian pairing journey is a testament to the blend of passion, dedication, and academic rigor required to master the intricacies of electronic music.
The festival’s roster was a panorama of electronic music’s many facets. From the soul-stirring beats of Folamour on the Zamna Stage, the pulsating rhythms of Trym, to the mellow harmonies of WhoMadeWho, Decibel catered to every musical palate. As the day transitioned to dusk, the supergroup Moderat’s ethereal performance at the Jager stage became a collective memory for many.
Sunday, the zenith of Decibel, saw the grounds reverberating with energy. The lineup’s diversity was evident, with Lazza and Salmo’s techno-infused sets challenging musical norms and leaving attendees intrigued.
However, it was Paul Kalkbrenner who stole the spotlight. The German maestro’s set, both raw and intimate, was a journey that resonated with every heart present. Every beat and drop spoke of his unwavering dedication to his art.
As the sun cast its golden hues, marking the end of a memorable weekend, Decibel secured its place not just as another festival but as an embodiment of the spirit and soul of electronic music.
Decibel stands tall in the vast expanse of Europe’s musical offerings, beckoning every electronic music aficionado to experience the magic amidst Florence’s grandeur.
